Ficus carica
Fig
Grown for centuries for the fruit which is absolutely delicious. The large foliage makes a great textural statement in the landscape. Plant in a shrub border for a wonderful coarse texture. Supply plants with plenty of irrigation in dry weather for best fruit production and to keep all foliage on the plant. Pollen causes little or no allergies. Eating fresh figs is one of the true pleasures in life. The taste is akin to a nutty, sweet, tannic acid. Dating from the Egyptians, they are held sacred by several religions. The fig is the first tree mentioned in the Bible. They came to America in 1769 in San Diego. Many fruits ripen in July.
